On January 24, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China announced recall plans from Tesla and Xiaomi, among other automakers, due to various safety concerns.
Tesla’s Massive Recall
Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. have filed recall plans with the SAMR, targeting two batches of vehicles:
1. 335,716 Vehicles Affected: This includes imported Model S and Model X, as well as domestic Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between July 16, 2023, and December 14, 2024. The issue stems from a potential reverse current damaging the power components on the vehicle control unit when the vehicle is powered on. This can lead to abnormal rearview camera functionality, potentially obscuring the reversing image and increasing collision risks.
2. 871,087 Vehicles Affected: This batch involves domestic Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between January 3, 2022, and September 23, 2023. The recall addresses a software issue in the electronic power steering system that may limit steering assistance, posing a safety hazard.
Xiaomi’s Recall
Xiaomi Auto has also issued a recall for 30,931 units of its SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles produced between February 6 and November 26, 2024. The recall involves three vehicle models: BJ7000MBEVR2 (18,410 units), XMA7000MBEVR2 (12,117 units), and XMA7000MBEVR5 (404 units). The issue is related to a software glitch that may cause synchronization anomalies, affecting the smart parking assistance function’s ability to detect static obstacles and increasing the risk of collision.
Xiaomi will address the issue through an over-the-air (OTA) software update to eliminate the safety hazard.
Other Automakers’ Recalls
In addition to Tesla and Xiaomi, several other automakers, including BYD, BMW Brilliance, Shanghai Volkswagen, and Dongfeng Honda, have also announced recalls, highlighting ongoing efforts to address potential safety issues in the automotive industry.
The SAMR’s disclosure underscores the importance of continuous safety monitoring and proactive measures by automakers to ensure consumer safety.
